Day 14: Road to Guatemala

Another 6am start. A 4-5 hour drive from Palenque to Frontera Corezal, the Mexican border. Cleared through customs for our exit stamp, then headed down to the river for border crossing – a 20 minute ferry across to Bethel, the Guatemalan border. Continued 繼續看…

Day 13: Tomb Raiders!

6am start. Road to Palenque, one of Mexico’s largest Maya ruins. In between stops at Agua Azul and Misol-Ha waterfalls, making this a tiring full day tour. Palenque is our prelude to Tikal (the reason why we are headed for Guatemala!) and did not fail to impress. Amazed how the Mayans inhabited this stone city in the middle of the jungle – we got that Lara Croft feeling as we explored the stone temples. So looking forward to Tikal now! Continued 繼續看…

Day 12: Feeling at home in San Cristobal

San Cristobal is everything we hoped it to be. A small laid back town perched in the mountains at 2,100m. Cool mornings & evenings, mid 20s sunny days. Narrow streets adorned with little houses in pastel colours. For some reason it feels like the Tibet of Mexico – the streets, the architecture, the people, even the main cathedral. We picked a great homely posada run by Yolanda who is loved by all the backpackers staying here. There is a beautiful south facing garden with accessible WIFI, making it a perfect spot for chilling in the sun and inking a new page in our travel journals. Continued 繼續看…

Day 9-10: Is this safe to eat??

Food Market in Oaxaca
One thing Oaxaca is famous for is its cuisine. So we decided to trust the diarrhea medication we had in case our stomachs couldn’t take it. The local food market was a haven to explore but you probably need to close your eyes and just forget what you see if you were to stuff something in your mouth. Raw meat is displayed on every comedor’s counter top, and to stay fed, its better not to wonder how long it’s been sitting there. Continued 繼續看…

Day 8: Stirring up a little convo in Oaxaca

4 hour bus ride. Arrival in Oaxaca (wa-HA-ka). Another charming little Mexican town that reminds me of Trinidad, Cuba. Lacks the colonial beauty of Puebla, but compensates with strong culture & character. Feels like there are more tourists here and not hard to see why. Oaxaca is famous for its culture, cuisine and artisenal handicrafts. For the first time I have an urge to buy something and faced with the problem of how.
