Day 23: Bus Ride to the Capital

Funky Buses of Guatemala

We were headed to Guatemala City to catch a long distance bus to Nicaragua this morning. It was our first ride on local buses here in Guate, and what fun it was! For less than US$4, we enjoyed a 3 hour journey that was every moment a spectacle. This was the sort of culture shock we sought after when we travel – being rushed onto the bus as our backpacks were thrown onto the rooftop, barely getting a chance to grip on tightly before the driver stepped on the gas, then finding the bus at 200% capacity! Day 22: Stumbling into disappointment

Here we are at Lago Atitlan, a lake surrounded by looming volcanos. Whilst the view is surely impressive, the villages that accessorize the lakeside are hugely disappointing. Far from the charms of Antigua, Panajachel is so infested by tourists it is almost disgusting. Thanks to retiring gringo’s, the unattractive main street is loaded with travel agencies selling packaged tours around the lake. Continued 繼續看…

Thoughts From The Road (Antigua > Panajachel)

Day 21: Having a laugh with the locals in Antigua

Day 20: Hiking Pacaya – Guatemala’s active live volcano

Getting up Pacaya turned out not to be the everyday (or weekend) hike. A strenuous 100 minute uphill challenge, through wind, rain, mud (& horse shit), thick fog (or cloud?) and rough jagged volcanic rock, we reached Pacaya’s active cone. Through the cracks in the volcanic surface we could see red hot lava streaming beneath our feet. It was no wonder they started to feel warm and I worried about our shoes melting – the guidebook did say not to wear shoes with thin soles. Continued 繼續看…

Arrival in Antigua. Will blog about it tomorrow. Sharing something from yesterday instead:

One of the great things about traveling is meeting people. Real people with interesting professions (ie. not finance). You meet people from all walks of life and it’s fascinating to learn how they sustain or support their travels. There was Eddie from France, a professional rock climber; a Swiss girl living in Honduras who makes necklaces & bracelets; Adrian from Romania, the documentary filmmaker. Then there’s Phil. Day 18: Bat Caving!

Today we are just hanging out at El Retiro, enjoying the natural surroundings and peaceful atmosphere (as well as the great food). Swaying gently in hammocks is one of the laziest experiences ever. 危地馬拉的啓示

危地馬拉（身處在像泰國的超多 backpackers 的 Lanquin resort）

首次親眼見證到，世界另一端的貧苦狀態。旅遊書說這裡一半以上人口仍生活在赤貧線下；坐巴士來時，沿途見到很多在努力幹活的小朋友，有的背負著很大很重的擔子走上山，有的帶著小弟妹在路邊兜售手工藝品，有的賣雞。在我們入住這 resort complex 餐廳工作的小孩只有16歲。
