Day 74: Where’s our money??

POLTUR – Tourist Police in Cusco

Bad news.

We were repacking our bags for a side trip to Machu Picchu when soon enough things didn’t seem right.

My cash stash envelope disappeared. Well, it must be in the backpack somewhere… “look carefully” I thought to myself.
“I think someone’s been through my pack” I heard KF say soon after. A couple of her items were misplaced in different parts of her pack.

“My backup camera’s gone.” she continued.

No way. Look carefully again. Our bags were always locked up whenever we left.

“Cash gone too.”

What?! How could this have happened?

I looked for the other stashes in my pack. Fuck. They were emptied out. My cash had also been stolen. Fuck. This couldn’t be happening. Fuck fuck fuck!!

Yes, our backpacks were skillfully broken into. It must have happened when we checked them in at Arequipa’s bus terminal (4 nights ago) but we didn’t realize until last night because the money was our backup cash which we hardly touch.

It was hard to believe because everything looked perfectly fine. No signs of our locks being messed with nor our stuff being rummaged through at all. The culprit must have opened our bags by breaking the
zipline and for a quick turnaround, only searched the internal side pockets for maximum probability of hitting jackpot. Jackpot they hit - we lost about USD500, a Swiss army knife (which I was looking for when we arrived in Cusco but thought I had misplaced it elsewhere), a camcorder and a cell phone.

On the bright side, it could have been much worse – our laptop and my DSLR were in the pack too but the bastard hadn’t gone for them.. (or having cocaine shoved in our bags then getting busted by corrupt cops)

Reported the incident to the police, now just hope our insurance isn’t going to be a hassle. Fingers crossed!
